Holiday card wording for awkward family
Calm lines and addressing etiquette when family is complicated—without forced reunion speeches or fake cheer.
Why holiday cards get weird
Divorce, estrangement, new partners, grief, and politics can make a simple “Happy Holidays” feel loaded. You can still send a short, honest card that does not reopen fights or pretend everything is fine.
Address the envelope with care. Keep the inside short. You do not owe a year-in-review essay.
What not to say
Skip these landmines.
- Guilt trips (“We never hear from you”) A card is not a courtroom. Skip scorekeeping.
- Digs at an ex, new partner, or “broken home” Keep adults’ conflicts off the card—especially if kids may read it.
- Unsolicited religion or politics Unless you know it is welcome. Warm season’s greetings are enough.
- “Why don’t you just make up?” Reconciliation is not your assignment in a greeting card.
- Long brag letters that ignore their hard year A short kind line beats a glossy round-robin that stings.
- Addressing someone by a name or title they rejected Use the name and household form they use now.

Addressing tips (short)
Envelope lines that reduce awkwardness.
- Use current names and households If someone remarried or changed their name, use what they use. When in doubt, first names only.
- “The [Last] household” or first names Safer than assuming who lives where after a split.
- Separate cards when needed Two short cards can be kinder than one that forces a combined fiction.
