What to write in a divorce support card
Supportive lines without gossip, blame, or forced cheer. Optional comfort ideas only after the wording.
Why divorce notes go wrong
People often pick a side, dig for details, or rush to “you’re better off.” A good note does none of that. It acknowledges that something hard is ending, offers steady presence, and leaves the story to them.
Do not ask who filed, who cheated, or how the kids are “taking it” in a card. Keep it short and non-investigative.
What not to say
Skip these—even when you mean well.
- “You’re better off” / “I never liked them” Side-taking and trash talk. They may still be grieving the relationship.
- “Everything happens for a reason” Minimizes. They do not need a lesson.
- Digging for details or gossip bait Curiosity is not support. Let them share what they want.
- “At least there were no kids” / “At least…” There is no useful “at least” here.
- Pressure to “get back out there” Timeline pressure. Dating advice can wait—forever, if needed.
- Comparing to your own divorce uninvited A brief “I’ve been through something like this” can be okay later; the card is not your memoir.

Optional. Support is the note. If a small comfort gift fits your relationship, these are category placeholders only—tasteful, not a “celebration kit,” and never a joke about the ex.
