What to write in a pet loss card

Messages that treat pet grief as real. Name the animal when you can. Skip minimization and forced cheer.

Why pet-loss notes matter

People often hear “it was just a pet.” A good card does the opposite: it names the bond, makes room for sadness, and does not rush anyone toward a replacement animal.

Use the pet’s name if you know it. Keep medical details out unless they brought them up. Optional memorial ideas come after the wording.

What not to say

Avoid these minimizers.

Templates by situation

Close friend — dog or cat

Example I’m so sorry about [Name]. What a good companion. Holding you in mind—no need to reply.

When you knew the pet

Example I’ll miss seeing [Name] too. They were lucky to have you—and you them. So sorry.

Coworker / lighter acquaintance

Example Sorry for the loss of your pet. Thinking of you.

After a long illness or difficult choice

Example I’m sorry you had to make such a hard, loving choice. Thinking of you and [Name].

Sudden loss

Example I’m so sorry. No good words—just care for you and for [Name]’s memory.

Child’s pet

Example So sorry about [Name]. It’s okay to be really sad. We’re thinking of you.

When you never met the pet

Example I’m sorry for your loss. Losing a companion hits hard—holding you in mind.

Later check-in

Example Still thinking of you and [Name]. No need to respond—just didn’t want the quiet to feel empty.

Short texts

Short text So sorry about [Name]. Thinking of you—no reply needed.
Short text Holding you and [Name]’s memory today.
Short text Grief counts here too. Care from here.

If you also send something

Optional. The note is enough. If a small memorial feels right, these are category placeholders only—never a push to “replace” the pet.
